As adults, we know that we learn from our mistakes, but mastering this skill takes years of practice. We encourage our students to be in their ‘stretch zone’, where mistakes are viewed as opportunities and not something to worry about. A strengths approach centres on what is working well, rather than focussing on weaknesses and a Strength Hero can ride the emotional ‘wizzy dizzy’ and bounce forward.
Working with Fiona Perella from Strength Heroes, our InsideOut team facilitated a series of workshops that explored the emotional reality of mistake making using art and play techniques. These workshops challenged students to deal with the emotions that come from mistake making and face them with a growth mindset. Parents supported their child in being comfortable with making mistakes by not jumping in to help.
Following the completion of the workshops, students are now working independently on the construction of an artwork that represents their ideal isolation home and these will shortly be displayed in a virtual exhibition.
