Careers

CareersPerth College endeavours to provide a comprehensive approach to Careers Education, having a programme that is both individual and group focussed. It incorporates:

Classes

There are regular classes at Year 10 level addressing issues such as self-awareness, career choices, decision making, further education and job seeking. Year 12 students have the opportunity to attend regular meetings that are designed to provide information on post secondary education options and career choices.

Work Experience

Work experience placements are undertaken at Year 10 level, although other year groups can also participate. The week long exercise is designed to allow pupils to get a glimpse of what it is like to do a specific job or be in an area of employment. It gives them a chance to explore a career they have identified as being suitable for their future and also provides an excellent window into the world of work. They usually negotiate their own work placement which offers them the opportunity to go through a process very similar to applying for a job.

Counselling services

Students and parents have access to the Careers Counsellor, and can discuss career pathways, future study at the college and post secondary education options. Year 10 and 11 students are able to schedule individual appointments with the Counsellor to discuss subject choices, post secondary education options or future career alternatives. Year 12 pupils are provided with individual counselling opportunities to offer guidance and information that will assist them in making informed decisions for the future. They can also receive help with their applications to TISC, TAFE and Private Tertiary Institutions, and in applying for various scholarships.

Western Australian Universities Career Counsellors

Career Counsellors from various Institutions come to Perth College once a year for individual and group appointments with Year 12 pupils, enabling the girls to ask questions directly to the most appropriate person.

Careers Fair

The Careers Fair is an evening when representatives from all the local universities, training providers and employers visit the School to offer access to a great deal of post secondary education information.

Psychometric testing

Year 10 students are given the opportunity to participate in two Self Exploratory Inventories;

  • MBTI

The MBTI instrument is a self report personality questionnaire that is used to measure and describe people's preferences for how they like to gain information, make decisions, and how they interact with the world. It can be a useful tool for assisting in the process of identifying suitable careers.

  • Newly Revised Strong Interest Inventory

The Strong Interest Inventory is a vocational tool, which is particularly useful for helping students explore career options and subject choices, as it helps to identify the types of work to which someone would be suited. It consists of a questionnaire that measures a person’s interest in 109 careers and provides a report outlining the findings.

Other year levels can also take advantage of these tests on request.

Guest Speakers

A series of Guest speakers talk to Year 10, 11 and 12 girls about post secondary education and career choices.

Mentor Breakfast

The mentor breakfast is an opportunity for Year 12 girls to have breakfast with a past student, or guest mentor, who will discuss aspects of their career. The girls have the chance to ask questions about a number of topics such as selecting a university or TAFE course, transition to tertiary education, life on campus, changing career direction, the realities of working life, etc.  It also provides them with an approachable role model who may be able to assist students with some of the important decisions ahead.

Parents as Career Partners Workshop

This workshop is offered to parents of Year 10 students and provides them with relevant and up-to-date information on career development such as future workforce opportunities, where to access the right information and most importantly what their child needs to achieve their career goals.
